2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

Since its reintroduction in 2015, the Chevrolet Colorado has filled the much-needed void for a capable mid-size pickup in Chevy’s offerings. The Colorado provides the potential for exceptional off-road, towing, and overall performance in a compact size. But which of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado trim levels is the right one for you?

It’s clear Chevy has put a considerable amount of time and effort into the 2023 Colorado. The completely new design includes enhanced engine capability, a wider chassis, new tech features, and so much more. If the Chevy Colorado didn’t catch your attention before, it certainly will now.

The 2023 Chevy Colorado comes in 5 different trim models. All trims come with a 2.7-liter V-6 engine with varying turbo levels depending on the trim. Also standard is an 11.3-inch diagonal touch screen display, several camera angles, and a second-generation 8-speed automatic transmission.

Up to 5 drive modes for optimum performance are available for the 2023 Colorado. These include off-road, terrain, Baja, tow/haul, and normal.

The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado is available in Black, Glacier Blue Metallic, Summit White, Nitro Yellow Metallic, Radiant Red Tintcoat, Sand Dune Metallic, Sterling Grey Metallic, and Harvest Bronze Metallic exterior color options.

All models are now only available as a crew cab with a 5-foot pickup bed. Unlike before with the option for an extended cab, Chevy has opted to keep all 2023 Colorado trim models the same in terms of cab and bed size. Another nice new feature also includes a lockable tailgate storage compartment that can be used to store safety gear or even used as a cooler.

Lastly, a host of high-tech safety features are standard with all trim levels. These include forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian breaking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam auto high beam.

Now that we’ve gone over some general features of the new and improved 2023 Chevrolet Colorado, let’s go into some specifics about the different trim levels.

2023 Chevrolet Colorado WT vs. LT

Starting with the 2023 Chevy Colorado base model, the WT (or work truck) is the workhorse of the 2023 Chevy Colorado Family.

The simple, yet practical design and features of the WT make it right at home at the job site, hauling materials for a DIY project, or simply used as a daily driver.

The WT uses a 2.7-liter turbocharged engine with an estimated 237 horsepower and 259 lb.-ft. of torque. In addition to 17-inch wheels and all-season tires, the WT comes with all the standard tech and safety features included with the other trim levels.

If you’re looking for a capable workhorse that’s also stylish and comfortable, the WT is a great trim option for those looking for something to get the job done.

Next up on the latest Colorado trim levels is the LT. With the same 2.7-liter Turbo engine and 17-inch wheels, the LT has a few additional features to add comfort and convenience for everyday driving.

The LT sets itself apart from the WT with its stylish body-color front fascia and black interior with silver accents, keyless open and start, and a remote locking tailgate. LT rear passengers can also enjoy rear air vents and comfortable seating.

If the minimalistic features of the WT don’t cut it for you, the LT is the next best option. The LT incorporates all the practical features of the WT with some extra flair and comforts you’ll be sure to appreciate.

2023 Chevrolet Colorado LT vs. Trail Boss

Now that we’ve covered the more basic trims of the 2023 Colorado, we can start to get into the 3 additional trims, all of which are very off-road capable.

If you’re in need of a bit more torque and off-road features than the LT, the next best option is the appropriately named Trail Boss.

The 2023 Colorado Trail Boss is the first of its kind for the Colorado line of trucks. The Trail Boss has a slightly enhanced 2.7-liter Turbo Plus engine with an estimated 310 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque.

In addition to some extra power for those off-road adventures, the Trail Boss features 18-inch black painted aluminum wheels, a 2-inch factory-installed lift, wider chassis, off-road performance display, 2-speed auto transfer case and transfer case shield, hill descent control, and automatic locking rear differential.

The trail boss is a serious-looking off-road-ready pickup with a stylish design. It’s definitely an eye-catcher, but don’t let its name and style make you think the Trail Boss is all bark and no bite. It can hold its own where the rubber meets the off-road.

2023 Chevrolet Colorado Trail Boss vs. Z71

The Trail Boss has a great look and serious features, but if you want the same performance with a more elegant look and extra comfort, the Z71 fits the bill.

The 2023 Colorado Z71 includes all the standard features as well as the offroad capabilities of the Trail Boss. The Z71 is also equipped with the same 2.7-liter Turbo Plus engine for enhanced torque and horsepower for off-road use.

Aside from having the same engine, unique to the Z71 are LED headlamps, taillamps, and foglamps for better, longer-lasting light from your truck. Another unique feature for the Z71 (and ZR2) is an underbody camera.

What makes the Z71 unique from the Trail Boss is its sleek and elegant appearance. Stunting a body-color front fascia and black with silver accented wheels, the Z71 is sure to turn some heads. If you’re someone who takes pride in the look of your truck but still want something that can take you off the beaten path to exciting wild places, the Z71 is a great everyday vehicle and adventure companion.

2023 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 vs. ZR2

The Z71 is an excellent all-around trim option. Chevy cleverly incorporates off-road capabilities, technology, comfort features, and style into the Z71 which makes it a versatile and attractive option for many buyers.

You can’t go wrong with the Z71, but not to put it down, the ZR2 is the pride and joy of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado trim levels.

The 2023 Colorado ZR2 is a mean-looking off-road beast with 17-inch wheels and 33-inch OD MT tires that includes a 2.7-liter Turbo High Output engine. This is the most powerful engine of the trim levels with an estimated horsepower of 310 and an impressive 430 lb.-ft. of torque.

Also unique to the ZR2 are some additional off-road features such as the addition of the Baja drive mode, Multimatic DDSV dampers, skid plate and rocker panel protector, 3-inch lifted suspension and a wider chassis. The ZR2 boasts a total ground clearance of 10.7 inches as well as an innovative underbody camera.

The 2023 Colorado ZR2 will also be available in the Desert Boss Special Edition model. Inspired by off-road racing, the Desert Boss ZR2 adds a unique off-road bumper front fascia, roof-mounted light bar, Desert Boss decals, and a sports bar with sail panel.

If you’re in the market for an uncompromising off-road vehicle for high-intensity conditions, The ZR2 could be the perfect truck for you.

Which Chevrolet Colorado trim should you buy?

With the completely new design of all the 2023 Chevy Colorado trim levels, it’s hard to choose just one. It seems you can’t go wrong with any 2023 Colorado, and whether you’re in need of a daily driver, work truck, towing vehicle, or feature-rich off-road pickup, there’s a trim option available for everyone.

That being said, the trim level that stands out above the rest has to be the ZR2 option. With all the comfort and tech features that come standard, the extra power from the Turbo High Output engine, and the additional offroad components, the ZR2 is hard to beat.

Performance attributes aside, you must admit the ZR2 just looks badass. If we’re really being honest with ourselves, half the reason we buy an off-road vehicle is because they look cool, right? If you say you don’t care about the aesthetic look of your vehicle and only what it can do, I have serious doubts.

The best trucks are the ones that perform well AND look cool because there’s no reason you can’t have both. It seems the ZR2 achieves that as well as any other truck out there.

Coming in at a close second is the Z71. A good argument could be made that the Z71 is the best overall option because it combines style, comfort, and performance. While Chevrolet has yet to release the prices for any of the 2023 Colorado trims, it’s safe to say the ZR2 will most likely be the most expensive one, which adds to the argument of the Z71 as the superior choice.

It will be interesting to see these trucks on the road when they become available to buy in early 2023, that is if the supply chain isn’t too horribly behind. I’m not usually a betting man, but if I were, I’d bet the house that we’ll be seeing a lot more ZR2 trims on the road than anything else.

With the current trends in style and the desire for off-road capability (regardless of whether or not it’s actually taken off-road), I foresee most consumers leaning towards the ZR2.
